What is Individual Therapy?
Individual therapy is a wellness tool that can be completely life-changing. People who are facing challenging mental health issues or undergoing difficult circumstances can often find enormous benefits from seeking the help of a skilled and empathetic therapist. However, individual therapy isn’t just limited to being a crisis solution and is often a preventative tool used for the upkeep of one’s mental wellbeing.
Individual therapy is a broad tool that can also help change behaviours, increase self-awareness, reduce stress, improve relationships, spark personal growth, build coping skills and overall navigate life well by fostering resilient mental health. Whether you’re seeking to heal from your past, improve your present health and happiness, or even prevent future mental health setbacks, individual therapy can help.
Individual therapy (also known as psychotherapy) is a form of therapy where the client and clinician work together to identify issues and change thoughts, behaviours, and emotions. It’s a one-on-one confidential meeting where clients are free to express their innermost selves in a setting completely free of judgment.
At Supportive Therapy, we work with clients to identify unique and individual goals that a client would like to achieve from sessions and use different modalities (CBT, Narrative Therapy, Mindfulness, Trauma Informed, Attachment Based etc.) in supporting clients to achieve successful outcomes.
When is it Best to Seek Individual Therapy?
Reaching out for therapy can be intimidating, and it’s common to see your personal struggles as “not bad enough” to seek help. Some people also feel pressured by friends or family to try therapy but don’t necessarily have any interest in getting help themselves.
The truth is, therapy works best when the client wants to be there and is willing to put in the work to see positive results. There is no problem too big or too small for therapy. Instead, what really matters is your willingness to participate fully and patience in the process as change unfortunately does not happen overnight.
Although there are no hard and fast rules around when it’s best to seek therapy, a few common signs it may be worth considering are if you’re experiencing:
- persistent or extreme emotional distress (anger, sadness, anxiety etc.)
- relationship troubles
- feeling constantly stressed
- a history of trauma or abuse
- self-destructive behavioural patterns
- low self-esteem
- burnout
- difficulty adjusting to life transitions
This isn’t a comprehensive list, but rather a starting point to check for some flags that you may benefit from therapeutic support. The bottom line is, if you’re interested in therapy and want to work on improving your mental health or to have a neutral space to debrief and process day to day life circumstances, it will very likely provide value.
How Do Individual Therapy Sessions Work?
Each individual practitioner will have a different approach to therapy from the modalities that they use, the approaches they may take, the training they have and the areas they focus on.
At Supportive Therapy, your first session will be what is called an intake or assessment session where we focus on collecting information about you, the new client. Understanding your history, current struggles, personality traits, the scope of your problems, and life circumstances are just a few essential elements a therapist needs to understand to provide personalized mental health care.
We also understand that as we are getting to know one another, it may take time for you to share certain pieces of your life and this is completely fine! Trust in a therapeutic relationship takes time as in any relationship, and we implore you to be conscious of and respect your own boundaries in these initial phases until deeper levels of comfort develop.
In this assessment session, you will also develop goals with your therapist. These goals can shift and change overtime but ultimately help ensure that the therapist you are working with is aligned with your expectations around therapy sessions.
With the support of your therapist, you will define a frequency of sessions that makes sense both in terms of goals as well as your financial capacity. Ongoing sessions can target the identified goals through strategy development but can also serve as a safe space for you to get support on anything else that is going on in your life even if it is not the main or initial reason why you came to therapy.
How Online Individual Therapy can Help?
A major shift in the world of individual therapy today is an expansion of online services. Now, therapists can offer the same quality of care using technology as opposed to in-person meetings.
This eliminates the need for travel which saves both money and time for clients. It makes it possible for even those with the busiest of schedules to fit in therapy sessions when they need them.
Many people also feel more comfortable opening up to their therapist from the comfort of their own home. They don’t have to cope with the unease of adjusting to a new environment which can be a relief for anyone who experiences high levels of anxiety.
Perhaps most importantly, online individual therapy makes therapy more accessible to those who need it. You’re no longer limited to the number of therapists available in your immediate area, and you can maintain your sessions no matter where you move or travel to.
